Since high-tech market research has become a moderately big business in its own right, some research companies – particularly the larger ones – are run first to make money and second to do good research. While such a philosophy may be all right – at least in the short term – for some businesses, it is not all right for any business that deals with advising clients. Forecasting markets for which there are no precedents and short or no histories is tough. The best forecasts are made by analysts with the best inputs and the best feel for the possibilities. Forcing someone to make – and live by – a numerical estimate should force him/her to consider all the forces that shape that number. But only a good forecaster can “hear the numbers talking” to him/her, enabling him/her to extract meaningful conclusions and recommendations.

We pursue equally energetically the makers of imager chips, illumination systems, optical and electronic components, and optical engines, as well as ODM/OEM/EMS manufacturers, so we can measure the entire supply chain and cross-check the figures from multiple sources, which significantly improves our – and our clients’ – understanding of the market.
The Founder’s Background
Dr. William Coggshall is the founder and President of Pacific Media Associates. His entire career has been devoted to high-technology research and consulting, including co-founding high-tech market research giant Dataquest (now part of Gartner). Bill has been covering the projector market since the introduction of the first OHP panel in April 1986.
He and his team are highly respected for their high standards of research methodology, quality, and ethics. Dr. Coggshall holds a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering with honors from Cornell University and a doctorate in industrial engineering from Stanford University, and has earned the Chartered Financial Analyst designation. As an acknowledged worldwide expert on projectors, Bill is frequently quoted by national and international news, business, and trade publications and is a regular speaker at industry conferences on projectors. As a regular fixture at A/V industry events and tradeshows, Bill is as well known for his cowboy hats and wild western shirts as he is for being an analysts’ analyst.
