PACIFIC MEDIA PREDICTS HOLIDAY HDTV SALES WILL SOAR, BUT REVENUES GO FLAT

Stiff competition leads to lower prices and flat revenue growth for 2007

Menlo Park, California — November 20, 2006. The holiday buying season is about to hit its full stride, and HDTVs will be a popular item this year. Pacific Media Associates, the global market information experts on large-screen displays, estimates that more than 3.2 million flat panel HDTVs will be sold to United States consumers in the fourth quarter of 2006, which is more than twice the number sold in the fourth quarter of 2005.

The HDTV price wars for this holiday season are great news for consumers, as the low prices will make it possible for many consumers to choose to upgrade to an HDTV, and often purchase an even larger model than they might have originally intended. With Wal-Mart and Target already throwing down the gauntlet by offering very low prices on products from major brands, early indications show that many other retailers will be providing attractive HDTV deals this season. In addition to breath-taking limited quantity offers on Black Friday, some price cuts will last through the end of the year. The manufacturers and retailers have apparently chosen to increase sales volume with significantly lower retail prices, sacrificing large portions of retail and manufacturing profits in the process.

"If we combine all flat panel and rear projection HDTV consumer sales in the U.S.," said Rosemary Abowd, Vice President with Pacific Media Associates, "we project an 80% increase in unit sales for 2006 over 2005. We expect that pace to slow somewhat for 2007, with units growing only by 19%, or about 2.3 million more units than 2006."

"Everyone expects growth in unit sales, but the big story is on the revenue side," continued Abowd. "Average street prices continue to decline steadily, in spite of the move to larger screen sizes and higher resolution models. As a result, manufacturers are selling more units but getting less in return. We project that revenues for 2006 will be only 42% greater than 2005, and will be flat for 2007 even though unit sales will increase."

RESELLERS EXPECT STRONG SHIFT TO WIDESCREEN PROJECTORS

Pacific Media Associates annual survey reveals strong interest in 1080p models

Menlo Park, California — November 16, 2006. Pacific Media Associates, the global market information experts on large-screen displays, has completed its 2006 North American Reseller/Retailer Survey, recording a projected 24% increase in front projector sales for 2006 over 2005. Now in its 11th year, the survey gives a unique window onto the state of the professional front projector market in the United States.

The survey results reveal many interesting and useful insights, but one in particular was striking. Confirming Pacific Media's early 2006 predictions, survey respondents see a strong shift from standard 4:3 aspect ratio projectors to the widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio models. Widescreen models accounted for 21% of sales in 2005 and are expected to climb to 33% in 2007.

Within the widescreen front projectors, the most growth is expected in the 1080p resolution segment. The 720p segment is expected to remain dominant, but dealers expect its share of the total widescreen market to decline from 73% in 2005 to 63% in 2007. Nearly all of that loss will be picked up by the 1080p segment, projected to climb from 4% in 2005 to 11% in 2007. (New 1080p front projectors from Sony and Mitsubishi priced under $5,000 came out after the survey period, and are likely to acceletate this shift.)

Another surprising result is that the dealers indicated that more than 25% of their sales in 2005 were to consumers, and the remainder was to organizations. For professional resellers, this is a large percentage of sales to consumers. Many factors play a part in this shift, but one of the prime causes is likely to be the result of efforts by professional resellers to expand their business and gain from the rapidly growing consumer front projector market.

PACIFIC MEDIA REPORTS RECORD-HIGH UNIT SALES IN FRONT PROJECTOR MARKET

Growth in New Era and Traditional Products

Menlo Park, California — November 2, 2006. Pacific Media Associates, the global market information experts on large-screen displays, reported in the company's Quarterly Front Projector Market Outlook that combined worldwide professional and consumer front projector shipments topped 1.22 million in the third quarter of 2006. According to Pacific Media Associates, long recognized as the number one source for accurate and complete data on the front projector market, the industry's third-quarter performance tops the previous high set back in the fourth quarter of 2005 and sets expectations for another record high in this year's fourth quarter.

"The emerging markets of Latin America, Eastern Europe, and China drove most of the front projector growth in the third quarter," said Michael Abramson, Vice President of Pacific Media Associates. "In these markets, attractive entry-level pricing for traditional SVGA and XGA projectors continues to tap demand in professional organizations such as education, business, and government."

While overall market growth in the U.S. and Western Europe slowed a bit from the sizzling pace set in the first half of the year, sales of New Era projectors registered sharp gains in developed markets. Sell-in of instant theaters was particularly strong in the U.S. thanks to sub-$1,000 pricing, the introduction of an enhanced model, the launch of a new unit with a super-close lens, and growing market demand for the true home entertainment experience. The consumer market also saw initial shipments commence for affordable 1080p HD projectors that — along with highly competitive pricing for 720p projectors — are poised for rapid growth in the U.S. and Europe during the upcoming holiday season.

Another New Era segment, professional widescreen projectors for all applications and budgets, showed robust year/year growth in Western Europe, North America, Australia, Japan and Korea. "We also expect some announcements soon for additional entrants in other New Era categories such as video boomboxes and pocket projectors. Combined with the recent strength in instant theaters and the professional widescreen market, this will make the next 12 months a watershed year in the New Era of front projection," said Abramson.

Looking at third-quarter performance on a regional basis, the Americas remained the leading region for the fourth quarter in a row with a solid double-digit, year/year gain, and captured 43% of worldwide sell-in shipments. Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) represented 32% of the worldwide market. The third quarter is traditionally the slowest quarter of the year in EMEA, and this past quarter was no exception. Expectations are that growth in professional XGA and consumer 720p models will spark EMEA's typical year-end buying spree. Projector sales in Asia turned in another double-digit gain to jump to 25% of the world market.

PACIFIC MEDIA REPORTS REAR PROJECTION HDTV SALES SURGED 30% IN AUGUST

Buyers showed preference for newer, high end models

Menlo Park, California — October 24, 2005. Pacific Media Associates, the global market information experts on large-screen displays, reports that unit sales for rear projection HDTVs in North America reversed the slumping sales figures from earlier in the summer, and jumped 30% for units and revenues in August. Their RPTV Sell-Through Tracking Service also shows that while inventories rose by 13% in August, the Days Supply Index fell as a result of the robust sales.

"The overall average street price rose by 0.5% in August," according to Rosemary Abowd, Vice President with Pacific Media Associates. "New models from Sony and Samsung appeared on the market, and buyers chose to buy newer models with higher price tags, rather than close-out models with reduced prices."

1080p models continued to dominate, gaining 7 share points to earn a 61% unit market share, even though the overall average street price for 1080p models was about $1,000 higher than for 720p sets.

Samsung retained the #1 position for unit and revenue market share. Sony's new 60" SXRD model KDS-60A2000 was the best selling unit in August.

PACIFIC MEDIA REPORTS FLAT PANEL HDTV SALES JUMPED 19% IN AUGUST

Prices continued to drop, down 27% since August 2005

Menlo Park, California — October 19, 2005. Pacific Media Associates, the global market information experts on large-screen displays, reports that unit sales for flat panel televisions and business displays in North America rose 19% in August over July's sales. Their Flat Panel Display Sell-Through Tracking Service also shows that the average street price — using actual transaction-based data — fell another 6% in August, for a total drop of 27% from August 2005.

"The upswing in August sales was a familiar event," according to Rosemary Abowd, Vice President with Pacific Media Associates. "We've seen similar increases in late summer for the past three years."

The preference for LCD over plasma is moving to larger models. 60% of all flat panel sales were for LCD models. In the 40" to 44" size segment, lower prices helped increase LCD's share of that segment to nearly half of the market at that size, with a 49% unit market share.

"We saw continued aggressive price strategies in August," according to Abowd. "The average street price for the 35" to 39" 1080p LCD segment dropped more than 19% in August, dropping below $2,000 for the first time."

Panasonic took top honors for unit market share across all markets, but Sony had a slim edge in the consumer segment, edging out Panasonic 21.2% to 20.9%. The best-selling consumer model in August was the Panasonic TH-42PX60U.

LCD PRICES FALL BELOW PLASMA IN 40"-44" HDTV SEGMENT IN JULY

LCDs take 57% share of 30" and larger display market

Menlo Park, California — September 12, 2006. Pacific Media Associates, the global market information experts on large-screen displays, reports that in July the average street price for 40" to 44" LCD flat panel televisions and business displays in North America dropped below those for high-definition plasma displays for the first time in the history of the company's "Flat Panel Display Tracking Service."

Not long ago, this size range was seen as being owned by plasma, because LCD models cost much more. Now that LCDs cost less on average, their share of sales is growing rapidly. In July, LCDs in this size gained 4 share points to reach a 46% unit market share. This trend is likely to continue, pushing plasma's dominant range up into the larger sizes of 50" and above.

"We've seen this repeatedly in the past," according to Rosemary Abowd, Vice President with Pacific Media Associates. "When the price of LCDs match or drop below the prices for plasma HDTVs of the same size, LCDs win. We expect that LCDs will account for the majority of unit sales in the 40" to 44" range soon."

Across all flat panels 30" or larger, LCDs gained another 3 share points for a 57% unit market share.

Unit sales for flat panels were down 10% in July over the previous month, which is similar to the summer slowdown seen in prior years. Unit sales were still up 67% over July 2005. Sales are expected to increase again as the football season and holiday buying season arrive.

Competition for the top spot in unit sales is very tight; Sony's 20.3% share was just one percentage point ahead of second place Panasonic, and Samsung was a close third. The Pioneer PRO-1130HD 50" plasma HDTV remained in first place on the best-seller list for the second month in a row.

PACIFIC MEDIA SURVEY SHOWS FRONT PROJECTION PREFERRED FOR TRUE HOME THEATERS

Dealer Survey Also Debunks Myths about Consumer Beliefs

Menlo Park, California — September 11, 2006. Pacific Media Associates, the global market information experts on large-screen displays, is nearly completed gathering data for its annual North American Dealer Survey. Near-final results reveal that Front Projection displays are preferred for home theater installations.

Just over 50% of dealers indicated that consumers believe Front Projection is primarily good for a true home theater experience while rear projection and flat panel TVs are more appropriate for mainstream TV programs.

"With all the attention focused on plasma displays and LCD TVs, we wanted to see how Front Projection really fit into the big picture of home entertainment," said Michael Abramson, Vice President of Pacific Media Associates. "And when it comes to the true home theater experience — watching movies &mdashl Front Projection is apparently the preferred choice among consumers."

The most surprising results of the survey debunked some commonly held myths about Front Projection in the home. Only 5% of dealers reported that ambient light issues make front projection a hard sell. As for the challenges of installation and room décor with front projection, less than 15% of dealers reported that these issues make front projection a hard sell. Some dealers have already taken steps to address these misperceptions by opening up new concept stores and committing additional showroom space devoted to front projection.

"These new dealer initiatives will go along way to showcase Front Projection to more consumers," added Abramson. "Along with the impending rollout of native 1080p and 720p projectors to suit all design tastes and budgets, we expect 2006 will mark a watershed year in consumer front projection."

The 2006 North American Dealer Survey data collection continues through the end of next week; the final reports will be distributed free to all participants in the fourth quarter. Dealers interested in participating in the survey can contact Linda Norton at (949) 493-4601 or LNorton@pacificmediaassociates.com for more details.

PACIFIC MEDIA TRACKS RECORD-HIGH U.S. CHANNEL SALES FOR FRONT PROJECTORS

Strong June Sales Caps Impressive Quarter in Pro AV, Distribution, and Retail

Menlo Park, California — August 17, 2006. Pacific Media Associates, the global market information experts on large-screen displays, reports that unit sales of front projectors actually sold through resellers and retailers to final buyers hit a new monthly high in June 2006 and registered a 29% increase compared with June 2005. Pacific Media's "Composite U.S. Channel Trends" report also shows that strong upward growth during the three months of the second quarter lifted total quarterly unit sales to an all-time high. Pacific Media is in a unique position to track the front projector market, as it has the highest overall coverage ratio for front projectors of any market information firm.

"We saw impressive year-on-year growth across the channels: Pro AV, Distribution, and Retail," according to Michael Abramson, Vice President of Pacific Media Associates. "Driving this growth were healthy demand, lower prices, and smaller price gaps between XGA and SVGA products. The lower XGA/SVGA premium continues to spark demand for XGA models, which have registered better than 50% growth on a year-to-date basis."

With the strong demand and ahead of the fall/holiday buying season, inventories dropped to their lowest levels of the year. The drop in stock levels was particularly noticeable in the Retail channel, where the supply index skidded to a low of 30 days. Days supply levels in the Pro AV and Distribution channels were either at or below their lowest levels of the year.

PACIFIC MEDIA REPORTS STRONG SECOND-QUARTER FOR FRONT PROJECTOR MARKET

Combined Professional and Home Theater Projector Sales Jump Nearly 30%

Menlo Park, California — August 14, 2006. Pacific Media Associates, the global market information experts on large-screen displays, announced that worldwide professional and consumer front projector sell-in shipments during the second quarter of 2006 rose to 1.2 million units, an increase of 28% over the same period last year.

"During the second quarter, we saw unit sales of professional projectors hit an all-time high," said Michael Abramson, Vice President of Pacific Media Associates. "Demand for professional projectors — sold mainly to businesses, education, and government — was strong in most major developed and emerging markets around the world. In the home theater market, sales growth continued to improve on a year/year basis. And we expect that momentum to build through the fall and holiday seasons as many new 1080p projectors hit the market and buyers increasingly turn to instant theaters to meet their growing demand for big-screen home entertainment."

Growth in the Americas led the way during the second quarter as that region jumped to a record-high 42% share of the worldwide market. Sales of both professional and home theater projectors registered impressive gains in the United States. And in the emerging markets of Latin America, demand for entry-level professional projectors continues to expand at a healthy pace thanks to rapidly falling prices.

Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) represented 36% of the worldwide market during the quarter, as projector sales jumped 30% compared with the prior year's second quarter. As economic sentiment indicators in the European Union climbed to a five-year high, growth in sales of professional projectors jumped to their highest levels in more than a year. Aggressive pricing actions continue to stimulate demand for professional projectors in the emerging markets of Eastern Europe as well as in the Middle East.

Second-quarter growth hit 20% in Asia but couldn't keep up with the torrid pace set in the first quarter of the year, when virtually every major country in the region experienced 35% or higher unit growth for professional projectors. In the second quarter, growth in China, India, Korea, and Singapore outpaced the rest of the region.

HDTVS CONNECTED TO MEDIA CENTER PCS EXPECTED TO TRIPLE BY 2007

Pacific Media's Annual Reseller Survey yields early results

Menlo Park, California — August 3, 2006. Pacific Media Associates, the global market information experts on large-screen displays, is in the process of gathering data for its annual North American Reseller Survey. Although it is still early in the process, some interesting trends are already developing.

For example, initial results indicate that the percentage of meeting and conference rooms with large LCD or plasma panel displays is expected to double from 2005 to 2007, though front projectors will continue to dominate installations for these applications, owning more than a two-thirds share.

"The hospitality market continues to be the focus of intense interest within the industry," according to Dr. William Coggshall, founder and president of Pacific Media. "Although in-room viewing for hotel guests is clearly the largest portion of the hospitality market, we were very surprised by initial survey results indicating strong sales for use in meeting room and conference facilities."

On the consumer side, early indications show that the number of HDTVs and front projectors connected to Media Center PCs could triple from 2005 to 2007. This has big implications for both the kind of products that will be demanded and the kind of expertise that will be needed by installers in the very near future.

The survey gathers information from dealers on a wide range of subjects covering both the professional and consumer markets. Early results indicate that buyers are willing to spend more for a 42-inch LCD HDTV than for a 42-inch plasma HDTV.

The 2006 North American Reseller Survey data collection continues through the fall; the final reports will be distributed free to all participants in the fourth quarter. PACIFIC MEDIA REPORTS INCREASED REAR PROJECTION HDTV SALES FOR JUNE

12% unit growth in June follows 19% increase in May

Menlo Park, California — August 1, 2006. Pacific Media Associates, the global market information experts on large-screen displays, reports that unit sales for rear projection televisions in North America grew by 12% in June over May's sales. Their RPTV Sell-Through Tracking Service report also shows that this growth was similar to the increase in June 2005.

"For the first time in our survey, all five of the top selling models had 1080p resolution," according to Rosemary Abowd, Vice President of Pacific Media. "55- to 59-inch 1080p DLP models were the best selling segment, accounting for 18.5% of the unit market share, and 17.4% of the revenue share."

The average street price fell 4% to $2,413. Year-over-year, unit sales were down 1%, and the average street price is nearly identical to where it was in June 2005. The market has shifted away from CRT-based products, and the prices of the microdisplay-based models have declined rapidly in the past year.

PACIFIC MEDIA REPORTS FLAT PANEL HDTV SALES ROSE 9% IN JUNE

Average prices continue to fall, down 6% over May and 22% since June 2005

Menlo Park, California — July 27, 2006. Pacific Media Associates, the global market information experts on large-screen displays, reports that unit sales for flat panel televisions and business displays in North America rose 9%, but the average street price dropped nearly 6% in June over the previous month. Their Flat Panel Display Sell-Through Tracking Service report for June also shows year-over-year unit sales rose 64%, but revenues have only increased 28% because the average street price is 22% lower than it was in June 2005.

"The Days Supply Index for LCD models smaller than 45-inches remained high," according to Rosemary Abowd, Vice President of Pacific Media. "This will put additional downward pressure on prices."

The 30- to 35-inch LCD segment was the most popular in June, with a 29% unit market share that was fueled in part by a 6% drop in average street price to $1,250. On the downside, 40- to 45-inch plasma models continued to lose market share, falling 6 unit share points in June. This segment has experienced a 14 point decline in unit market share since last winter's holiday season.

Samsung moved past Sony to take the number one position with 22.8% unit market share. In revenue share, Samsung topped Pioneer by the slimmest of margins, 21.2% to 21.1%. The Pioneer PRO-1130HD was the best-selling flat panel TV for the month.

PACIFIC MEDIA SEES GROWTH IN SPITE OF LCD HDTV SLOWDOWN

Demand-side analysis predicted supply-side inventory glut

Menlo Park, California — July 17, 2006. Recent news reports about production slow-downs in the LCD panel industry have led some to wonder if the sky is falling for the flat panel HDTV market. LG.Philips LCD has announced major losses for the second quarter of 2006 and scaled back plans for new production lines. Manufacturers in Taiwan have announced reduced production and worker furloughs. LCD panel inventories are high, and some fear that prices will fall even further as manufacturers try to empty their warehouses. Pacific Media Associates, the global market information experts on large-screen displays, sees positive signs in spite of these problems.

"The LCD industry is dealing with the results of exuberance that may have been a bit irrational," according to Pacific Media Associates vice president Rosemary Abowd. "A number of industry sources have been predicting breathtaking annual growth rates. As a result, manufacturers have embarked on an arms race of expanding production capacity. The attitude seems to be that an oversupply is acceptable so long as it is your company's panels that are being sold."

For many US households, a television is one of the most expensive purchases made. Most consumers don't buy a new TV just because new technology is available, no matter how cool it might be. Instead, they wait until the existing set "breaks" (either through failure or unacceptable image quality), or until they remodel their home, or until they move to a new one.

"The semiconductor industry has a long history of ignoring consumer demand, with often-disastrous results," observed William Coggshall, president of Pacific Media Associates. "Some simple reasonableness checks would have kept the LCD fabs out of trouble. In 2005, only about one in six consumers who bought a new TV paid more than $800, which is about the minimum price for a 32-inch LCD TV set today. The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) estimates that about 32.5 million sets (of all sizes and technologies) were sold in the US during 2005, while PMA estimates that consumers bought about 2.6 million flat panel televisions 30-inches or larger (including both LCD and plasma), plus another 3.0 million rear projection TVs. This total of 5.6 million is 17% of the CEA's overall total, which means that only about 17% of buyers were willing to spend more than $800 for a new television.

"For 2006, we forecast 4.4 million flat panel TVs 30-inches or larger – both plasma and LCD – will be sold. While this is a healthy increase of 69% over our observed 2005 numbers, it is still considerably less than the triple-digit growth forecast by some sources. However, if you add the expected 3.2 million rear projection sets, you get a total of 7.6 million sets in the $800+ range. The CEA's forecast calls for a total of 29.0 million TV sets for 2006, which means that 26% would be have to cost more than $800, up from the 17% for 2005. This seems extremely unlikely, so something has to give. In fact, several factors will likely change substantially – for the worse – during the remainder of 2006."

It will still take some extraordinary changes to reach even this conservative estimate. The average price that US consumers are willing to spend on televisions will have to rise even further. This will have to happen in spite of rising energy and interest costs, which feed the growing consumer uncertainty.

LCD TV prices will drop further; the average selling price for a 37-inch LCD display dropped nearly 18% from $2,343 in February 2006 to $1,920 in May 2006 according to Pacific Media's sell-through tracking of true, transaction-based prices. Now that LCD panel inventories have accumulated, there will certainly be additional downward pressure on prices, even though it means manufacturers will have to sell at less than their production costs.

Prices for plasma and rear projection TVs will also have to drop significantly. We have seen significant price drops for rear projection sets in our June Ad Track report. Plasma prices will likely decrease in order to remain competitive with declining LCD TV prices.

"Even if all these changes occur, it will be a stretch to sell 7.6 million large screen TVs in 2006," according to Coggshall. "The limiting factor is not supply, but demand. Lower prices have been proven to increase demand, and it's a question of how far manufacturers are willing to cut prices in order to keep their factories running."

PACIFIC MEDIA HIGHLIGHTS HOSPITALITY MARKET FOR HDTVS

New construction and renovation projects represent strong opportunities

Menlo Park, California — July 14, 2006. Pacific Media Associates, the global market information experts on large-screen displays, reports that the hospitality market is experiencing unprecedented growth, and presents important opportunities for sales of flat panel HDTVs.

Nearly 111,500 new hotel rooms were under construction in the United States as of March 2006, of which about 75,000 will be completed this year. "Flat panel televisions have some important advantages over traditional CRT models," notes Pacific Media Vice President Rosemary Abowd. "The smaller footprint of these sets gives designers the freedom to use smaller furniture. This space savings can be used to fit additional rooms per floor without sacrificing guest space. The space can also be used to make room for other amenities or simply provide a more luxurious experience."

In addition to new construction, however, ongoing renovation of existing properties account for even greater opportunities; some sources estimate that there are 4 million hotel rooms in the United States, and these undergo major renovation every seven to 10 years, resulting in at least 400,000 redecorated rooms each year.

"Not all properties are candidates for in-room flat panel HDTVs," observes Abowd. "Economy hotels generally do not have pay-per-view or other services, and rely on inexpensive CRTs for in-room entertainment. Travelers staying at higher-priced hotels are expecting a more luxurious level of service. Flat panel TVs shout 'luxury' for not much more money."

For example, the new Cambria Suites chain already has reported contracts for 23 properties averaging at least 100 suites per property. Plans call for flat panel televisions in both the living and sleeping areas in each suite. This will result in the purchase of more than 4,600 units, just for these new properties. Many large renovation projects also plan to place flat panel televisions in guest rooms, such as the 532-room Radisson Hotel Martinique in New York City, and the 190-room Doubletree Hotel Claremont that recently reopened with 32-inch LCD HDTVs in each room.

"The hospitality market has special needs," according to Abowd. "In addition to pay-per-view services, hotels also offer free-to-guest high definition TV, in-room billing, and other services. Displays need to support LodgeNet and OnCommand systems, or possibly new IP-based systems. At Pacific Media, we track display shipments and sales by the individual model, so we are able to provide detailed information about the products with the specific features required by the hospitality market.

"We also conduct an annual reseller survey, through which we collect data about large display sales to hotels and lodging applications, not just for in-room viewing, but meeting room support, public area entertainment, and digital signage applications."

PACIFIC MEDIA FORECASTS SINGLE-DIGIT ANNUAL GROWTH FOR REAR PROJECTION HDTVS

Dominant role of Americas markets will increase further

Menlo Park, California — June 5, 2006. Pacific Media Associates (PMA), the global market information experts on large-screen displays, reports rear-projection HDTVs will experience only limited growth through 2010. Their "Rear-Projection TV Worldwide Forecast" also predicts that prices will continue to decline, so total worldwide revenues are actually expected to decline over the next five years.

"The Americas markets will continue to account for the majority of unit sales," according to Rosemary Abowd, Pacific Media Vice President. "They accounted for 73% of sales in 2005, and this will increase steadily to reach 78% in 2010."

Sales have shifted towards larger sizes and higher resolutions, especially the "future-proofing" choice of 1080p. Unit market share for 1080p models nearly doubled from 15% in Q305 to 29% in Q405. Unit market share for models 60-inches and larger grew from 19% to 25% over the same interval.

The technology used by rear-projection TVs is expected to shift over the coming years as CRT designs are replaced by microdisplay models. In 2005, CRT models held a slight advantage with a 33% unit share, with LCD second at 29% and DLP close behind at 28%. DLP is expected to take over the lead position in 2006, and grow to a dominant 48% share by 2010, followed by LCoS at 24% and LCD at 22%.

PACIFIC MEDIA STRESSES IMPORTANCE OF COMMERCIAL SIDE OF NEW ERA PROJECTION

Singles out professional widescreen and pocket projectors for big growth

Menlo Park, California — June 5, 2006. Pacific Media Associates, the global market information experts on large-screen displays, has just released the next quarterly installment of their saga of the New Era in front projection. This timely release, coupled with an overly full week of conferences and trade shows dealing with all categories of large-screen displays, underlines the importance of the myriad subtle shifts that Pacific Media expects will result in a whole new look to the industry within five years.

Dr. William Coggshall, founder and president of Pacific Media, will moderate a panel discussion entitled "New Projection Markets" at the Projection Summit 2006 conference in Orlando. While the panelists will focus mainly on technical developments such as the use of lasers and LEDs, Dr. Coggshall will remind the audience of the importance of the commercial side of the equation. As he points out, "the continued growth of the overall projection business demands that companies identify new types of users who have never before been exposed to projectors. To reach those users will require that brands never before associated with projectors embrace these new products because of their fit with the audiences who already identify with the brand. And those brands are likely to use distribution channels that are not yet widely used by the current projection business."

Pacific Media's latest installment focuses on two specific developments that promise to change the shape of the industry before 2010. The first is a dramatic shift toward widescreen (16:9) aspect ratios for projectors purchased by the professional market (organizations rather than individuals). "We believe that numerous factors – such as the continuing shift to widescreen PC monitors and laptop screens, the growing popularity of the widescreen look in consumer TVs, and the quest by manufacturers to offer more upscale products to help preserve their revenue structure – are conspiring to drive the demand for, and supply of, widescreen front projectors," according to Dr. Coggshall. "Even more surprising to many in the projection industry, it is becoming increasingly likely that a big part of that demand will be satisfied by projectors with the 'future-proof' 1080p HDTV resolution...and we mean substantially more in meeting rooms than in home theaters."

The second development is the continued burgeoning interest in pocket projectors. Although technology demonstrations have been going on for several years, and commercial shipments started late in 2005, the pace has quickened dramatically in the last few months. "Unit shipments in the first calendar quarter of 2006 exceeded PMA's expectations, new companies are coming out of the woodwork with demonstrations of components or whole projectors, and the category is coming alive," says Dr. Coggshall. "Nay-sayers who dismissed these fledgling models due to their low brightness are learning that there are some uses for which it is the mobility, not the brightness, that counts."

PACIFIC MEDIA: LARGE HDTV MARKET DEFIES PRICE-BASED LOGIC

40- to 49-inch flat panel HDTVs outsell rear projection 4 to 1

Menlo Park, California — June 1, 2006. Pacific Media Associates, the global market information experts on large-screen displays, reports that unit sales for flat panel HDTVs and business displays – LCDs and plasmas – in North America have outstripped sales of rear projection models. In spite of higher selling prices, flat panels have dominated sales of models larger than 40 inches, long thought to be the heart of the rear projection market. In short, consumers want thin TVs and will pay a premium to get them.

Over the past 16 months, the unit market share of flat panel displays larger than 40 inches has grown from 32% to 62%.

"Flat panel displays continue to carry average street prices well above those of rear projection models," according to Rosemary Abowd, Vice President with Pacific Media, "but the gap has closed significantly in the past six months, shrinking from $2,000 in January 2005 to just $500 in April 2006. The price advantage does not appear to help rear projection sales, as individual consumers still appear to be very willing to spend up to $1,000 extra for a flat panel television in some size segments of the market."

Competition is fiercest in the 40- to 49-inch HDTV segment, and flat panel models have been about $1,200 more expensive than rear projection models since the 2005 holiday buying season. In spite of the higher price, flat panel models have outsold rear projection models 4 to 1 over the last six months. Rear projection models continue to outsell flat panels among the larger, high-resolution models such as 1080p HDTVs larger than 50-inches, as this is where the price advantage is the greatest for now.

Pacific Media is in a unique position to provide this analysis across HDTV technologies. The monthly average street prices are based on actual retail transactions by individual model collected from a sample of more than 50 major retailers and dealers throughout North America. This true sell-through volume-weighted data, available for the U.S. only from Pacific Media and NPD, requires the hard-to-get cooperation of retailers and dealers. The result is more accurate and more valuable than the easy-to-get unweighted Web-based price check data used by other research or publishing firms. The data for the comparison presented here was pulled from a subset of the total database, looking at comparable data from retailers with monthly data for both flat panel and rear-projection sales for the past five quarters. As with any data based on a sample, it is subject to sampling error, but the breadth and long-term consistency of the data collected by Pacific Media provides dependable results.

PACIFIC MEDIA: FLAT PANEL HDTV SALES DROPPED IN APRIL AS PRICES DECLINED 5%

Panasonic unit share nearly doubles in two months

Menlo Park, California — June 1, 2006. Pacific Media Associates, the global market information experts on large-screen displays, reports that unit sales for flat panel televisions and business displays in North America fell 16% for April. Their Flat Panel Display Sell-Through Tracking Service also shows that the average street price fell 5% for the month.

"The drop in unit sales is consistent with what we saw with rear-projection HDTVs and consumer front projectors," according to Rosemary Abowd, Pacific Media Vice President. "In spite of the decline in April, unit sales for LCD and plasma panels show considerable annualized growth, and are up 70% over April 2005."

The top-selling models in April were the Panasonic 42" TH-42PX60U and 50" TH-50PX60U plasma HDTVs, which became available in quantity in April with aggressive pricing. Their success helped Panasonic nearly double its unit share over the past two months, to take the top spot with 29%. It also had top revenue share with 30%.

PACIFIC MEDIA'S POCKET PROJECTOR DELPHI SURVEY SEES MILLION UNIT MARKET BY 2009

Worldwide survey predicts prices in $300-400 range within 3 years

Menlo Park, California — May 30, 2006. Pacific Media Associates, the global market information experts on large-screen displays, sponsored a Delphi Survey (a proven technological forecasting tool) in early 2006 that concluded there will be a demand for a million units of pocket projectors worldwide within three years.

Pocket projectors are sub-1 kilogram in weight, and are battery powered. Manufacturers and would-be manufacturers have introduced or proposed a wide variety of designs, including laser and LED illumination, and a variety of DLP, other MEMS, AMLCD, polySi LCD, and LCOS imagers. This exciting market is just starting to take shape, so they are welcoming any guidance on what could be the sweet spots in the market.

Other key findings from the Delphi Survey included:

  • The preferred footprint will be approximately that of an iPod. This is noticeably smaller than the models introduced so far, but the technologies being investigated have the promise of achieving this, and even smaller sizes.

  • The average price will drop into the range of $300-400 within three years. PMA's interpretation of this finding is that it is likely to come from a combination of technological advances on the supply side and a shift in the market from the current purely professional buyers (organizations) to a majority of purchases by individual consumers on the demand side.

  • There will be from four to 15 manufacturers offering pocket projectors in the future. At least a dozen already have announced their general technology and intentions for this market, and most current front projector manufacturers are likely to have designs in their R & D labs. As a result, this estimated count may sound conservative, but it may be quite realistic as a prediction of the number of viable manufacturers.

The Pocket Projector Delphi Survey was conducted by a team of Technology Management students from Hochschule Ravensburg-Weingarten (Germany), and was sponsored by Pacific Media Associates. It is the only publicly-available survey covering this interesting, and potentially high-growth, emerging category of front projectors. Dr. Peter Philippi, who directs Pacific Media's EMEA market information activities, is also a Professor of International Business at the University of Applied Sciences at Hochschule Ravensburg-Weingarten, and provided guidance for the student team conducting the survey.

Dr. Philippi pointed out that "the Delphi Survey of Pocket Projectors provides valuable insight into the likely future evolution of the technology and market for pocket projectors. Pacific Media was able to draw on its global list of clients in the front projector business to find the experts who participated in this survey. As a result, the survey included industry experts from the Americas, Asia, and Europe/Middle East/Africa markets, which assured a truly worldwide perspective. Pacific Media continues to receive many expressions of strong interest in this ground-breaking survey."

PACIFIC MEDIA ASSOCIATES REPORTS REAR-PROJECTION HDTV SALES ROSE 10% IN MARCH

Samsung took over the top units sales spot from Sony

Menlo Park, California — May 11, 2005. Pacific Media Associates (PMA), the global market information experts on large-screen displays, reports that unit sales for rear-projection televisions in North America rose 10% last month. Their March 2006 RPTV Sell-Through Tracking Service also shows that sales revenues only increased 6%, as average street price dropped 4%.

"DLP models continued to sell well," according to Rosemary Abowd, Vice President with PMA. "They accounted for 64% of the unit market share, up from 59% in February, and up from 51% in March 2005. As for resolution, 720p models gained three points to take the majority of the unit market share with 52%. This gain was at the expense of 1080p models, which dropped three points to 45%."

Strong sales of 46-, 50-, and 56-inch models catapulted Samsung past Sony to the number one position based on unit sales. The company's 46-inch HLR4667W was the top-selling model for March, boosted by many close-out sales. Sony was a close second in overall unit sales, with four of the seven best-selling models for the month.

PACIFIC MEDIA ASSOCIATES: FLAT PANEL HDTV SALES RESUMED GROWTH IN MARCH

40 to 45 inch plasma and 30 to 35 inch LCD were the most popular

Menlo Park, California — May 10, 2006. Pacific Media Associates (PMA), the global market information experts on large-screen displays, reports that unit sales for flat panel televisions and business displays in North America grew by more than 12% in March over February. Their Flat Panel Display Tracking Service also shows that sales revenues increased almost 5% for the same period.

"After holding fairly steady since October, average street prices across all sizes dropped nearly 7%, in spite of tighter supplies than a year ago," according to Rosemary Abowd, PMA Vice President. "Year-on-year unit sales continued to rise, up 110% over March 2005."

"The biggest gains were posted by the 40- to 45-inch plasma segment and the 30- to 35-inch LCD segment. Both gained about two points in unit sales share, and each accounts for about 30% of total unit sales," according to Abowd.

Panasonic recovered the number one spot in unit sales, but Pioneer retained the lead in terms of total revenues. The Pioneer PRO-1130HD plasma and Sony KDL-V40XBR10 LCD were essentially tied for first place as the most popular consumer models, each with about a 7% share.

PACIFIC MEDIA ASSOCIATES SEES BIG POTENTIAL FOR INSTANT THEATER

Bellwether models already showing meaningful impact

Menlo Park, California — April 24, 2006. Pacific Media Associates (PMA), the global market information experts on large-screen displays, predicts rapid growth for "instant theater" front projector products over the next four years. These models have an all-in-one design that incorporates a projector, DVD player, and sound system, making them quick and easy to set up and use.

"Instant theaters are a perfect example of the out-of-the-box thinking required for success in the New Era of the front projection market," according to Michael Abramson, PMA Vice President for Front Projectors. "Their innovative and attractive industrial design gives them a broad appeal, from home entertainment to classroom applications."

PMA predicts that sales in this segment will accelerate rapidly. Rising from 44,063 units in 2005, sales are expected to reach 258,320 units for 2006, and increase to more than 1.2 million units for 2010. With annual sales forecast to exceed $842 million by 2010, this is a market segment that is sure to attract much attention from consumers, retailers, and manufacturers.

Epson, Optoma, and Radio Shack have current models that already are contributing a meaningful portion to sales of consumer front projectors. 3M and Toshiba have also announced models. Here is what some of the manufacturers are saying about their products and the market for instant theater projectors.

"The Projector/DVD combo product category is in its infancy stage of mass-market penetration, but the rapid rate of acceptance seen so far in the U.S. strongly indicates that sales for these products will grow significantly over the next few years," said Fabia Ochoa, group product manager of home entertainment with Epson America. "While traditional front projectors for homes typically end up in fixed or permanent location (such as a ceiling installation), combo projectors such as Epson MovieMate 25 offer a unique advantage in the form of portability. Their integrated DVD players and sound systems give users the convenience and flexibility to simply transport an entire movie theater system to other rooms, without any cabling inconvenience. Overwhelmingly positive and consistent feedback from our customers tells us that the Epson MovieMate 25 has quickly become an enjoyable and integral part of their households."

According to Jon Grodem, Sr. Product Manager at Optoma Technology, "MovieTime is doing well because it was designed from the ground up to serve the needs demanded by the instant theater concept, from the built-in DVD player and speakers. But we have also found that an all-in-one projector such as MovieTime is also ideal for teachers. It's lightweight and portable, and easy to set-up. Along with the built-in features, the unit is easy for teachers to carry from classroom to classroom."

"RadioShack is almost a whole channel by itself", said Sara Bell, who is the Brand Manager responsible for their Cinego model. "While we have many stores in major metropolitan areas, we are also known for being in smaller towns throughout the country, many of which may never be served by the big box consumer electronics retailers. RadioShack is famous for its knowledgeable sales associates who will help identify a customer's needs and find the best solutions for them. Many of our customers may have never been exposed to a home theater projector before and may be moving up from a 15-year-old 20-inch color TV. We can help educate them as to why a home theater projector can enrich their home entertainment experience."

"As the No. 1 projector brand in retail and a leader in developing 'crossover' products that serve both professional and home entertainment needs, Toshiba believes the new 'instant theater' projectors will be a huge growth opportunity," according to Sam Malik, Director of Marketing, Toshiba Digital Product Division, Projector Business Unit. "These extreme short-throw projectors are perfect for home users and apartment dwellers who don't have the space for big-screen TVs or who simply want a less intrusive product. We believe the optimum product for this market should have a throw distance of just three feet covering a 100-inch diagonal area. It should also be feature-rich, incorporating true theater surround-sound technology and speakers, an HDMI input for high-definition programming, and the no-compromise Realta HQVTM processor (Hollywood Quality Video) from Silicon Optix for outstanding image quality."

PACIFIC MEDIA ASSOCIATES FORECASTS RAPID GROWTH FOR POCKET PROJECTORS

Early models point toward innovative applications soon

Menlo Park, California — April 19, 2006. Pacific Media Associates (PMA), the global market information experts on large-screen displays, has identified the emerging "pocket projector" market as one poised for rapid growth in the next few years.

"The New Era of the front projection market requires innovative designs and new applications," according to Michael Abramson, PMA Vice President for Front Projectors. "While pocket projectors are still early in their development, we see enormous potential for these products."

Pocket projectors typically weigh about a pound, are relatively dim by typical front projector standards, and are designed for individual or small group viewing. Most of the models shown to date rely on DLP imagers using LEDs as the light source. LCD versions have been shown recently, and some models in development will use lasers for the light source.

As the brightness of LEDs increases, we could see 100 lumen pocket projectors by 2009 or even earlier. Developments to boost brightness could reach that point even sooner. One major question is how these projectors will be used.

"We see the development of pocket projectors as going through three stages," explained Abramson. "Currently, they are seen as standalone products, to be connected to other devices such as PDAs, cell phones, iPods, and handheld video games. By 2008, these projectors will be modules designed to attach directly to such mobile business and consumer devices. By 2010, the projector will become an integrated part of the devices to provide large imaging capabilities for handheld, battery-powered units."

Unit sales for pocket projectors are forecast to reach about 20 thousand units for 2006, but then rapidly increase to more than 1.5 million units in 2010. Revenues over this period are expected to jump from about $15 million in 2006 to more than $500 million in 2010.

PACIFIC MEDIA ASSOCIATES REPORTS PIONEER GRABS TOP SPOT IN FLAT PANEL MARKET

The flat panel display market continues to grow despite seasonal fluctuations

Menlo Park, California — April 18, 2006. Pioneer took over first place in both unit sales and revenues in the consumer flat panel market in February, according to Pacific Media Associates (PMA), the global market information experts on large-screen displays. Pioneer's PRO-1130HD 50-inch plasma also earned the best-selling honors. The Sony 40-inch KDL-V40XBR1 LCD TV was in second place for the month.

PMA's Sell-Through Tracking Service showed that unit sales in February declined 21% and revenues were down 20% from January's figures. Sales of LCD and plasma HDTVs were down in February 2006.

"We saw a continued drop off since the holiday sales," according to Rosemary Abowd, Vice President with PMA, "but the market segment continued to grow. February unit sales were up 82% compared with February 2005."

"The average street price was almost steady, up 1% for the month to $2,900," Abowd continued. "Sales shifted slightly towards larger sizes and higher resolutions. LCDs gained a little, but plasma still held a 55% share of the 30-inch and larger flat panel unit sales. In the battleground range of 40 to 44 inches, average street prices for LCD and HD plasma were just about equal, and the unit share for LCD has been growing steadily, reaching 27% in February."

PACIFIC MEDIA ASSOCIATES PREDICTS VIDEO BOOMBOXES WILL TAP VAST KIDS MARKET

Menlo Park, California — April 7, 2006. Pacific Media Associates (PMA), the global market information experts on large-screen displays, recently released a forecast indicating that video boomboxes will represent a big growth opportunity in the New Era of front projection. Video boomboxes are all-in-one audio/video devices geared towards children and priced at $299 or less. PMA predicts that high-volume production of these products will begin within the next two years, and unit sales will surge to 1.2 million by 2010 with revenues topping $350 million.

"This is an exciting new segment, and it exemplifies the novel products and applications that will be part of the New Era in front projection," said Michael Abramson, PMA Vice President for Front Projectors. "Think of video boomboxes as simple and cheap versions of current instant theater products. Hasbro's Zoombox is the first video boombox. And we see a lot of supply-chain activity for more products of this type."

While Hasbro's product integrates a built-in DVD player and sound system, PMA expects future video boomboxes may simply take in video files like other mobile video players or may serve as peripherals to gadgets that receive or record video. Just as portable cassette players have been popular with kids for years, a similar device that lets them watch movies and animated content is sure to be hit a hit as well. "Video boomboxes will give kids more choice and control of their entertainment. They'll be able to watch what they want, when and where they want it, without tying up the family entertainment system," said Abramson.

PACIFIC MEDIA ASSOCIATES MAKES SWEEPING CHANGES TO FRONT PROJECTOR FORECASTS

New Era will see emerging segments fuel rapid growth in consumer market

Menlo Park, California — April 4, 2006. Pacific Media Associates (PMA), the global market information experts on large-screen displays, has just released a new shipment, street price, and revenue outlook for the front projector industry. Coming on the heels of PMA's recent announcement that 2006 is ushering in a New Era in front projection, these latest forecasts provide hard data to guide those looking to seize innovative market opportunities.

"A few manufacturers have already gotten the idea. They've brought instant theaters and pocket projectors to market," said Michael Abramson, PMA Vice President for Front Projectors. "Those two segments alone are expected to generate nearly three million unit sales by 2010 and help the consumer market play a greater role in the industry. So too will a product geared toward kids: $299 video boomboxes. We expect to see high-volume production of these all-in-one audio/video devices within the next two years."

The New Era in front projection will also be marked by major changes in the professional market. The widescreen world is coming to mainstream business, religious, government, and higher-education settings. That will lead to triple-digit growth in affordable 768p and 1080p front projectors. The outlook for higher resolution 4 x 3 projectors is just as bright as smaller and lower-priced SXGA+ projectors offer portability to match higher-resolution notebooks as well as higher quality image reproduction for typical office applications.

"More than three years ago, sub-$1,000 SVGA projectors energized the projector industry," said Abramson. "But now we are on the verge of a New Era in front projection, one that will be characterized by manufacturers and suppliers that are going to win with new technologies, appealing industrial and consumer designs, new consumer electronic gadgets for the masses, and market approaches that embrace revolutionary change rather than a me-too attitude."

PACIFIC MEDIA ASSOCIATES SEES 2006 AS BEGINNING OF NEW ERA IN FRONT PROJECTORS

Some TV giants will likely quit projector business

Menlo Park, California — March 30, 2006. Pacific Media Associates (PMA), the global market information experts on large-screen displays, predicts that the front projector market is starting a major transition, and some major companies will likely leave the market. PMA just released a dramatically-changed forecast and outlook for the front projector industry for 2006 and beyond.

"The projector business is gridlocked, and most manufacturers must change their approach or die a slow death", says William Coggshall, founder and president of PMA. "The 'Old Era' of nearly identical products, distribution channels, and targeted customers — with competition based mainly on price — will have to give way to a ‘New Era' marked by less-conventional thinking and a willingness to take some risks. Doing this in an orderly fashion will be a challenge in the very near future."

Continues Coggshall, "To achieve the transition from the Old Era to the New Era will require thinking that is more creative, less conventional, or even a bit contrarian. Successful companies will be those who understand that waiting until an opportunity is clear means that others will get there first and make all the money. They will have to focus on being approximately correct rather than precisely wrong, a far cry from the current 'paralysis by analysis'. There are no new answers in the same old data."

Unlike gadgets such as laptop computers, mobile phones, digital cameras, and iPods, Old Era front projectors have failed to reach the critical mass required to become must-have products for individual consumers. But in the New Era, companies with vision will take advantage of further miniaturization, lower costs, and new technologies to enable projection capability to be built into all sorts of consumer electronic gadgets by the end of this decade.

Many TV manufacturers initially embraced projection technology as the most likely replacement to the venerable CRT, but today's reality is that large LCD and plasma panels dominate. And while some companies made substantial investments in projection technology, few actually developed critical components or proprietary technology. Without a strategic reason to continue, other companies are likely to exit the projector business. But as the Old Era segues into the New Era, some unlikely non-TV companies are likely to seize at least some of the emerging opportunities, such as pocket projectors, instant theater, and video boomboxes.

PACIFIC MEDIA REPORTS SLOWER FLAT PANEL GROWTH RATE IN 2005

Americas retain lead as fastest-growing region worldwide

Menlo Park, California — March 24, 2006. Pacific Media Associates (PMA), the global market information experts on large-screen displays, reports that worldwide sales for flat panel televisions and business displays — including LCD and plasma technologies — grew to 20.5 million units, up 59% in 2005 compared with 2004, down from 155% growth for the previous year. Their Worldwide Flat Panel Display Census also shows that the Americas region had the greatest growth at 85% (down from 162% in 2004 over 2003). EMEA — Europe, Middle East, and Africa — was second at 76%, and Asia third at 33% in terms of unit sales growth in 2005 over 2004.

"LCDs have remained fairly steady at about three-quarters of the flat panel unit sales worldwide," according to Rosemary Abowd, Vice President with Pacific Media Associates. "Plasma panels make up the remaining quarter."

The 30 to 35 inch segment was most popular with a 22% market share at 4.2 million units, and fastest growing at four times the quantity for 2004. The next most popular size was 40 to 45 inches, with 4.2 million units, which is double the amount for 2004.

Sharp was the leading brand worldwide on a unit sales basis, with an 18.8% market share. Sony was second with a 15.7% share, and Panasonic was third with 14.1%.

PACIFIC MEDIA ASSOCIATES REPORTS SURGE IN HD FLAT PANEL SHIPMENTS IN AMERICAS

Consumer Shipments Show Rapid Growth for Larger Screen Segments

Menlo Park, California — March 24, 2006. Pacific Media Associates (PMA), the global market information experts on large-screen displays, reports that unit sales for flat panel televisions and business displays in the Americas — including LCD and plasma technologies — grew to 6.2 million units in 2005, up from 3.4 million in 2004. Their Americas Consumer Flat Panel Display Census also shows that growth has slowed; unit sales grew 162% from 2003 to 2004.

"The largest growth occurred among the HDTV models," according to Rosemary Abowd, Vice President of Pacific Media Associates. "In 2004, the Wide XGA models only accounted for about 365,000 units in the Americas. Last year, this segment soared to almost 2.3 million units, more than a six-fold change. The second most popular resolution was 720p, nearly doubling from 649,000 units in 2004 to 1.2 million units in 2005."

Larger screen sizes were also more popular. The 30 to 35 inch size was the top seller in 2005, growing from 263,000 units in 2004 to 1.4 million units. The 40 to 45 inch segment was second, growing from 497,000 units in 2004 to 1.2 million in 2005.

Sharp was the top-selling brand on a unit basis in the Americas for 2005 with a 19.0% share. Sony was in second place with 15.8%, and Panasonic was third with 13.7%.

PACIFIC MEDIA REPORTS PROJECTOR SHIPMENTS TOP 4 MILLION UNITS FOR 2005

China takes over #2 spot behind U.S. as top projector market

Menlo Park, California — February 14, 2006. Pacific Media Associates (PMA), the global market information experts on large-screen displays, announced that worldwide professional and consumer front projector sell-in shipments during 2005 rose 17% to more than 4.1 million. Shipments for the last quarter of 2005 reached 1,219,000 units, which was nearly 20% higher than 4Q '04 and beat the previous quarterly high set in the third quarter of 2005.

"In 2005, we saw innovative consumer products come to market, such as instant theater models — with build-in DVDs — and the first pocket projector," said PMA Vice President Michael Abramson. "We also saw the introduction of higher-performance 720p models as well as the first of many attractively priced 1080p models. In the professional market, the news was more than just XGA breaking the US $1,000 barrier. In 2005, we saw the beginnings of a shift toward even higher resolution with more affordable, portable SXGA+ projectors as well as the burgeoning market for 1080p digital cinema projectors."

Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) led the world with about 43% of the industry's fourth quarter's worldwide shipments. The fourth quarter is traditionally the strongest quarter of the year in EMEA, but it also benefited from continued economic improvement in Western Europe. That helped the sales of professional projectors show strong sequential gains in France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. Growth in Eastern Europe and the Mid-East was particularly robust during the fourth quarter.

In the Americas, a large tender in Mexico helped the region register the highest annual growth in the world. In the U.S. market, strong holiday sell-in of instant theater projectors and enhanced 720p models drove the market to an all-time quarterly high in shipments of widescreen projectors.

And in Asia, sales of consumer models in Japan helped lead the region to another quarter of overall double-digit growth. Sales of professional projectors in China eased somewhat from the record-setting pace set in the third quarter. But the country still finished the year with impressive growth that vaulted it to the number two country for projectors behind the United States.

PACIFIC MEDIA REPORTS FLAT PANEL TV SALES MORE THAN DOUBLE OVER DECEMBER 2004

Average street price falls 26% in one year

Menlo Park, California — February 6, 2006. Pacific Media Associates (PMA), the global market information experts on large-screen displays, reports that December 2005 sales for flat panel televisions in North America rose 22% from the prior month's levels, and 112% compared with December 2004's sales. Their Flat Panel Display Tracking Service also shows that revenues rose 17% compared with November, while the average street price fell 4%. Compared with the previous December, 2005 showed a revenue increase of 57%, along with a dramatic 26% decline in average street price.

"A lot of the action was in the 30" to 35" size range," according to Rosemary Abowd, Vice President of Pacific Media Associates. "The unit market share for this segment increased two points to 27%, and the average street price for this segment fell 8% to $1,500."

The competition between LCD and plasma continues to be a tight race. The Panasonic TH-42PX50U 42" XGA plasma TV was the top-selling consumer model in December, but the Sony KDL-V40XBR1 40" LCD TV was close behind in second place. Panasonic remained #1 in unit share sales for December, but Pioneer held onto its #1 position in revenue share.

REAR-PROJECTION HDTVS BOUNCE BACK WITH 23% INCREASE IN DECEMBER

Sony takes top four spots on best-selling list

Menlo Park, California — February 3, 2006, 2006. Pacific Media Associates (PMA), the global market information experts on large-screen displays, reports that unit sales for rear-projection HDTVs grew by 23% for December 2005 compared with the prior month. Their December 2005 RPTV Tracking Service also shows that sales revenues also increased slightly more with a 24% rise.

"The overall average sales price increased slightly due to a small shift toward more expensive models," according to Rosemary Abowd, Vice President of Pacific Media Associates. "Average selling prices for 23 of the top 25 models were flat or down slightly. Increased sales for the more expensive LCoS models helped boost the overall revenues."

The LCoS segment grew to 19% of the rear-projection HDTV market, largely on the strength of Sony's SXRD models. The 50" and 60" models were Number 2 and 3 on the top sellers list, with Sony's 42" KDF-E42A10 LCD model taking the top position. Sony's 50" LCD rear-projection model held the fourth place, which gave Sony the top position overall, with 39.8% unit market share and 41.8% of the total revenues.

In spite of this end-of-year increase, rear-projection unit sales were down 6% compared with December 2004. During 2005, tremendous pressure from flat panel televisions kept down rear-projection sales. The December 2005, the $1,750 average street price for a 42" enhanced-definition plasma television was about the same as for rear-projection models of similar size, and average prices for high-definition 42" plasma were approaching $2,000. As a result, rear-projection televisions are having a difficult time competing in this size segment.

AV NEWS AND PACIFIC MEDIA ASSOCIATES ANNOUNCE 2006 UK RESELLER SURVEY

Premiers new series focusing on resellers of large displays

Deal, Kent, United Kingdom and Menlo Park, California, USA — February 1, 2006. AV News, the leading business and technology magazine for AV resellers, distributors, manufacturers and service providers, and Pacific Media Associates (PMA), the global market information experts on large-screen displays, announce that they will be jointly conducting a survey of United Kingdom resellers specializing in audio-visual products during 2006. The survey will focus on large displays, as well as interactive and related products.

"The dramatic improvements in price/performance in all AV products, and especially in large displays, is leading to expanded market opportunities," points out Bryan Denyer, Editor of AV News. "As the vital link between manufacturers, distributors and end users, resellers are in the best position to know what is going on in the industry... who is buying, what the applications are, what sort of products are most in demand, which manufacturers and distributors are doing the best job working with them, and a host of other key issues. We are hearing repeatedly from our manufacturer and distributor contacts that they need a better understanding of the trends in the market and the needs of resellers, and have partnered with Pacific Media Associates to create an annual survey to probe all of these key issues."

"Pacific Media Associates has conducted 11 annual surveys of resellers of large displays in North America, and our survey is the oldest and biggest of its type," says William Coggshall, President of PMA. "We have noticed that our surveys yield information that the industry needs in order to rise above a purely price-based competition, information that results in insights that in turn leads to more creative marketing and selling strategy and tactics. Having established our approach in North America, we wanted to apply it to the major markets in Europe. We were delighted to find in AV News a kindred spirit and look forward to exploring the UK market together"

The survey will be conducted using a questionnaire administered to a database provided by AV News. The questionnaire will be based on the ones successfully used in North America, but tailored for the UK market. Some of its key topics will include:

  • Sales breakdown by buying organization type (various sizes of businesses, education, government, etc.)
  • Applications (presentations, training, product demonstrations, etc.)
  • Expected trends by key product features (size, resolution, aspect ratio, etc.)
  • Connect ratios of projection screens, mounts, document cameras, etc.
  • Street price premiums for advanced features
  • Ratings of manufacturers and distributors
