PACIFIC MEDIA REPORTS REAR-PROJECTION TV REVENUES RISE IN OCTOBER

Sony LCD models take top two slots in Top 10 list

Menlo Park, California — November 30, 2005. Pacific Media Associates (PMA), the global market information experts on large-screen displays, reports that rear-projection televisions RPTVs posted a 3% revenue gain in October in spite of a 2.7% drop in unit sales over the previous month.

"The average street price jumped 5.5% for the month," according to Rosemary Abowd, Vice President. "The key reason for this large increase a rarity in the world of consumer electronics was the dramatic growth in the fraction of sales of 1080p resolution microdisplay-technology models, from 13% in August to 24% in September and a whopping 32% in October.

"Another factor for the price increase was the continued shift toward larger models," she continued. "The 50-to-55-inch segment went from 32% to 36% unit share, accounting for 40% of the total revenues, up from 34%. The growing popularity of liquid-crystal on silicon LCoS models, including D-ILA from JVC and the premium-priced SXRD from Sony, also helped boost street prices."

DLP continues to be the dominant technology with nearly two-thirds of the total revenues, but two of Sony's LCD displays the 42-inch KDF-E42A10 and the 50-inch KDF-E50A10, placed number one and two on Pacific Media’s top ten best-selling list of RPTVs for October. And on a revenue basis, Mitsubishi regained the top position, with the top-grossing 62-inch DLP WD-62628, after Samsung held the position for one month.

PMA REPORTS RECORD-HIGH FRONT PROJECTOR SHIPMENTS IN Q3 '05

Solid Year/Year Growth in All Regions

Menlo Park, California — November 9, 2005. Pacific Media Associates (PMA), the global leader in value-added demand-side market information on large-screen displays, announced that combined professional and consumer front projector sell-in shipments during Q3 '05 reached 1,069,000, representing 20% year/year growth and besting the previous quarterly high set in Q4 '04.

"Strong Q2 '05 sell-thru, particularly in education, helped balance inventories and set the stage for robust Q3 ’05 sell-in," according to PMA Vice President Michael Abramson. "And as the price gap continues to shrink for XGA versus SVGA projectors, growth in the sub-$1,000 and $1,000-$1,499 XGA market also fueled the record-setting shipments in Q3 ’05."

Regionally, the Americas continues to lead the world with about 40% share of the worldwide market. In Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), which represents 35% of the worldwide market, the projector market rebounded from a challenging second quarter thanks to improving economic conditions in Western Europe and continued healthy growth in developing economies. And in Asia, red-hot sales of professional projectors into China and a bounce back in Japan's professional market propelled the region to the fastest year/year growth in the world.

"We expect the momentum to continue throughout the fourth quarter led in part by strong sales of widescreen projectors," said Abramson. Year/year worldwide growth in the just-finished quarter reached nearly 30% for native 16:9 projectors. While EMEA, led by Western Europe, remains the leading market for widescreen models, the U.S. continued to close the gap during the third quarter. "We see a strong start to the holiday buying season for consumer front projectors," Abramson predicted. "There will be more widescreen models available for under $US1,000. This will also be the first full holiday season for the new ‘instant theater’ 480p models with built-in DVD players. And in the market for 720p models, consumers can now choose from a number of notable upgrades with dramatic improvements in price/performance."

PACIFIC MEDIA AD TRACKING REPORT SHOWS BIGGEST PRICE DROP IN LARGE LCD TVS

Ad Prices for Plasma and Rear-Projection Hold Steady in October

Menlo Park, California — November 8, 2005. In the October edition of their monthly Consumer Advertising Analysis, Pacific Media Associates (PMA) reports significant advertised price drops for LCD TVs, especially in the larger sizes. But plasma and rear-projection display prices held fairly steady since September.

"LCD TV models are now being advertised at the same price points as plasma in the 42" size, and both technologies have decreased the price gap with rear-projection models of similar size," according to PMA Vice President Rosemary Abowd. "The aggressive pricing in all three segments may make it difficult for retailers to cut prices further as we lead up to Black Friday and head into the holiday buying season."

The biggest advertised price movements were in the larger LCD sizes in October. In the 40-42" category, advertised prices continued to challenge 42" HD PDP technology. Olevia's 42" model appeared at J&R for $2,299, and Best Buy offered 40" JVC LCD TVs for $2,999, down $500 from September. Prices for Sharp LCD TVs declined across-the-board with 26" models offered at $1,199 (Circuit City, CompUSA); 32" models falling several hundred dollars to around $1,500 at several retailers; and 37" models priced at $1,999 (6th Avenue Electronics) which is $800 lower than September advertised prices. The 26-27" LCD models from Maxent ($688 at 6th Avenue Electronics), ViewSonic ($750 at CompUSA), Westinghouse ($800 at Best Buy & The Great Indoors) and Syntax ($800 at CompUSA) mirrored September's prices and remain several hundred dollars below similar-sized top-brand models.

Plasma showed little movement in advertised pricing, although product features are clearly shifting to more HD and larger sizes. Many more HD-Ready and Fully HD 42-43" models were featured in October than in past months. The Dell 42" HD PDP model, advertised at $2,499, carried one of the lowest advertised prices in the category. Sears advertised a Philips 42" HD PDP for $1,999 on the final October weekend, while Best Buy continues to advertise the Maxent 42" HD PDP at the same price. EDTV prices continue to hover around $1,800 for name brands and $1,500 for lower-tier brands, the same as in September. In the 50" category, Dell's introduction of a 50" HD PDP at $3,799 late in the month may push prices lower in November, but for October most models hovered between $3,500 and $3,999.

Advertised prices for rear-projection displays remained steady, particularly for the smallest screen sizes which stayed around $1,999. The main exception was the 44" Fully HD Panasonic 3LCD model that dropped $500 to $1,488 later in October at 6th Avenue Electronics. 6th Avenue Electronics also had the lowest advertised price for a CRT-based RPTV, selling the Hitachi 51M200 for $883. There was also lots of activity in the 50-53" space with prices falling $200-$300 on LGE DLP model 52SX4D ($2297.97 at Video and Audio Center), Panasonic 3LCD Fully HD PT-52LCX65 ($1,798 at 6th Avenue Electronics), and the JVC D-ILA Fully HD HD-52G786 ($2,499 at Best Buy). It is interesting to note that the Sony SXRD Fully HD KDS-R60XBR1 was advertised during the same week for $3,999 at Circuit City, $4,699 at Best Buy, and $4,999 at Magnolia and 6th Avenue Electronics.

The advertised prices in PMA's monthly Consumer Advertising Analysis reflect the final price after manufacturer and retailer rebates. The advertised price does not reflect gift cards with purchase to be used in the future or other offers and promotions. Data is gathered from retailer or manufacturer advertising in flyers, inserts, run-of-press ads, direct mail, broadcast offers, and store visits. Local newspapers are surveyed in the New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco metropolitan areas.

Note that these advertised prices only reflect promotional activity, but still are a useful indicator of where things are headed. They are not the same as the true average prices for an individual model or for a category. A low price from a second- or third-tier brand may not be at all representative of the vast majority of units sold. Getting representative prices requires much more research, and PMA's family of subscription-based Tracking Services continue to set the platinum standard in channel sell-through (units-weighted) street price averages experienced by retailers and resellers.

PACIFIC MEDIA ASSOCIATES REPORTS FRONT PROJECTOR SALES INCREASE 29% FROM MAY TO JUNE 2005

PMA Composite U.S. Channel Trends Report Shows Sharp End-of-Quarter Unit Sales Increase in U.S. Distributor and Pro AV Channels

Menlo Park, California — August 20, 2005. Pacific Media Associates (PMA), the global leader in demand-side market information on large-screen displays, reports that front projector sales increased 29% across the combined indirect sales channels from May 2005 to June 2005. According to the PMA Composite U.S. Channel Trends Report for June 2005, the U.S. Distributor Channel sold nearly 31,000 units in June 2005, an increase of 45% from May 2005. The Pro AV channel had the highest units sales with about 47,000 units sold, an increase of 27% from the previous month.

"We have seen sharp increases in unit sales during the final month in each of the last three quarters. Sales in June were driven by largely the education market which is served by both the Distributor and Pro AV channels," says Michael Abramson, the PMA Vice President who directs PMA's research on front projectors. "Retail channel sales also increased by about 19% in June, but the education market dominates during this time of year," adds Abramson.

Total Channel Sales — June 2004 to June 2005

"While it may appear that the retail channel maintains large inventory levels, relative to unit sales, retail inventory has steadily declined for the past three months. Our Composite Report allows us to compare inventory levels across all channels. We see a decline in inventory within each channel from March through June," adds Abramson.

PACIFIC MEDIA ASSOCIATES FINDS LCD TV SALES OUTPACE PLASMA WHEN PRICES REACH PARITY

LCD Overtakes Plasma in 37" Television Segment; When will 42" Plasma Come Under Pressure?

Menlo Park, California — August 17, 2005. Pacific Media Associates (PMA), the global leader in demand-side market information on large-screen displays, reports that in May 2005, 37" LCD televisions for the first time captured 51 percent share of the market segment that also includes 37" HD PDP and 37" EDTV PDP products. May was not a fluke, as 37" LCD increased its share further in June 2005, taking 57 percent of the segment. The increases in market share have been driven by a drop in average street price for 37" LCD televisions, placing these products on a virtually equal price footing with 37" HD PDP products. Average prices for 37" LCD hit a low of $3126 in June 2005, a decline of about 25% from March 2005 when the ASP was $4138. The ASP for 37" HD PDP in June 2005 was $2963.

"Contrary to some popular thinking, LCDs can't support a price premium over similarly-sized PDPs," says Rosemary Abowd, the PMA Vice President who directs PMA's research on flat panel displays and rear projection. "While LCD prices hovered above PDP prices, the market preferred the plasma models. As soon as the price for LCD models matched the PDP prices, LCDs captured a significant portion of the segment."

LCD Increasing Market Share — 37" LCD versus 37" PDP — July 2004 - June 2005

"It's likely that you will see few 37" PDP products on the market during the 2005 holiday season. Some PDP manufacturers are abandoning the segment, opting to concentrate on 42" PDP televisions, which are just as efficient to produce and carry a higher price" adds Abowd.

Which technology will win the race? LCD-technology flat panel TV's have replaced plasma-technology TV’s in the 32" segment and are on their way to doing the same in the 37" segment. This should make market watchers and plasma manufacturers worry that the 42" segment is also vulnerable. Once the giant LCD fabrication facilities in Asia reach full capacity and can produce 42" glass panels considerably more cheaply and in much greater quantity than today, we expect a huge battle between LCD and plasma.

PRICES FOR FLAT PANEL TELEVISIONS DROP SHARPLY IN 2Q2005

PMA Sell-Through Research Finds Flat Panel TV Prices Plummet
as DLP and 3LCD RPTVs Strike Out for Market Share

Menlo Park, CA July 31, 2005: Pacific Media Associates (PMA), the global leader in demand-side market information on large-screen displays, reports that the street price for 40”-45” flat panel televisions dropped an average of 14% from 1Q2005 to 2Q2005. Prices for 42” – 43” flat panel HDTV plasma televisions saw the largest decline, dropping 17% and average prices for 40”-42” HDTV LCD televisions dropped 14%. From January to June 2005, sales of 40”-45” flat panel televisions increased by 26%. While sales of 40”-45” DLP RPTV sets increased by 65% during the same period, that growth came largely at the expense of 40”-45” 3LCD RPTV sets, with sales dropping by 44%.

“Prices are dropping much more quickly now that micro-display RPTVs are more widely available in the 40”-44” size,” says Rosemary Abowd, the PMA Vice President who directs PMA's research on flat panel displays and rear projection. “While buyers may still be unsure of the total cost of ownership with MD-RPTVs, that's not stopping them from noticing this value-priced alternative. Our survey shows that overall volumes for RPTVs are down in the second quarter, but their attractive pricing is forcing flat panel prices to decline sharply.”

Flat Panel and Micro-Display Rear Projection TV Average Street Price 1Q2005 – 2Q2005

“There is still a gap in price between RPTVs and high-definition flat panel televisions, but it's getting smaller. A consumer can now purchase a high-definition plasma set for about $3500 and for about $4500 they can get a high-definition LCD television,” adds Abowd.

WORLDWIDE PROJECTOR MARKET CONTINUES TO SHOW
SOLID DOUBLE-DIGIT GROWTH FROM 2004Q1 TO 2005Q1

Americas Region Outshines All Other Regions to Start off 2005; XGA
Microportable Passes SVGA Microportable as Top Segment; 480p
Projector Shipments Nearly Double over the Past Year

Menlo Park, CA – June 2, 2005 . The worldwide projector market grew 19% from 2004Q1 to 2005Q1, according to Pacific Media Associates, the global leader in demand-side marketing information on large-screen displays. In the just-published Worldwide Market Census of 53 projector manufacturers, combined professional and consumer projector shipments totaled more than 901,000 units for the first quarter of 2005. The Americas region outpaced the rest of the world with a year-to-year growth rate of 23 percent, with shipments totaling nearly 347,000 units.

“Within the Americas , the United States kept pace with the rest of the world with a solid 19 percent year-to-year growth rate. However, Canada and Latin America were especially strong with growth of 51 percent and 44 percent respectively,” said PMA Vice President Michael Abramson , who directs PMA's research on front projectors. “For the second quarter in a row, Europe , the Middle-East and Africa region was tops in terms of total volume. But the Americas have narrowed the gap. Combined, these two regions represented nearly 80 percent of the worldwide market. Asia , Japan and China also remained strong with 16 percent year-over-year growth,” added Abramson.

PMA also reports that 230,000 XGA Microportable projectors were shipped during 2005Q1, which represented approximately 26 percent of the total market and made it the largest projector product segment. Worldwide, XGA Microportable projectors (4.41 lbs. – 6.6 lbs) became the leading product segment in 2005Q1, reaching their highest share level in nearly two years. “In the first quarter of this year, microportables represented about 50 percent of the market and SVGA dropped to slightly less than half of that. Over the past year, shipments of XGA Microportables increased by 45 percent, while SVGA shipments declined slightly. One reason for this is the price gap between XGA and SVGA has gotten smaller and more buyers are opting for the better performance of XGA. In the home theater market, worldwide demand for 480p projectors remained strong as year-over-year shipments nearly doubled and prices continued to move to the $1000 barrier,” said Abramson.

NEC RANKS FIRST AMONG NORTH AMERICAN PROJECTOR
BRANDS IN PMA SURVEY; HITACHI AND MITSUBISHI
ALSO SCORED STRONGLY

Product Quality, Availability, Price/Performance and On-Time Delivery,
and Responsive Support are Most Important Aspects in Resellers’ Minds

Menlo Park, CA – May 25, 2005.  NEC had the top scores on 6 of the top 10 rated aspects of marketing support, products, and after-sale support related to resellers' sales of professional front data/video projectors. As a result NEC came out on top in the overall composite rating in the 10 th annual survey conducted by Pacific Media Associates (PMA), the global leader in demand-side market information on large-screen displays. PMA's Annual Reseller Survey is the authoritative source of independent, unbiased ratings of large-screen displays manufacturers by professional resellers throughout North America.

“The market for front data/video projectors is more competitive than ever. Most resellers carry multiple product lines, so manufacturers have to do more than just make good products. They must provide compelling sales, marketing and technical support programs if they are to capture mindshare and market share at a reseller,” said Michael Abramson, who directs PMA's research on front projectors and was PMA's project manager for the Reseller Survey. “We found that aspects resellers considered most important in 2003 continued to be important in 2004 and will probably remain important going forward. The top manufacturers had strong scores in many individual aspects, but in addition to leading in 6 of the 10 most important aspects, NEC also had the highest composite scores in marketing support and after-sale support, and ranked near the top in product aspects. Other manufacturers also ranked highly in many individual aspects. Hitachi ranked number one or two in 4 of the 8 most important aspects. Mitsubishi, the highest-rated brand for the three previous years, was also strong, with the number one or two rating in 3 of the top 8 aspects,” adds Abramson.

The survey ranks 25 aspects of marketing support, products, and after-sale support according to their importance to resellers. Resellers then rated their key suppliers on each of these aspects. Ratings were based on a scale of 1 (very poor) to 5 (very good). Manufacturers scoring highly on the more important aspects posted higher overall composite scores more than those who scored well on less-important aspects. The report includes numerical ratings for each manufacturer for each aspect and manufacturers can learn if they are doing well on those aspects to which they have dedicated the most effort, and to see where they are lagging.

The two top-rated companies for the most important eight aspects are given below:

  • Product Quality/Reliability – Hitachi, NEC

NEW RPTV SELL-THROUGH DATA SHOWS MICRODISPLAY-BASED
MODELS ACCOUNT FOR LARGE MAJORITY OF MARKET

PMA's Monthly Tracking Service Finds That
DLP-Technology Sets Outsell 3LCD Sets 5 to 3

Menlo Park, CA – March 16, 2005.  Pacific Media Associates (PMA), the global leader in demand-side market information on large-screen displays, has just released their first monthly report on shipments of rear-projection televisions (RPTVs) sold through retailers in North America. According to PMA, microdisplay-based models (those using DLP, 3LCD (i.e., polysilicon LCD), or D-ILA/LCOS) accounted for over 75% of the total units and over 85% of the total revenues in the rear-projection market during January 2005. Among microdisplay sets, DLP ones currently are selling more d espite the higher price of DLP-technology sets than 3LCD-technology sets.

T hese just-released findings come from the premier (January 2005) issue of PMA's new RPTV Tracking Service , which reports and analyzes unit shipments, average street prices, and inventory data provided by North American TV retailers. PMA's new service becomes the sixth in a family of monthly sell-through measurement services that also include three covering the major distribution channel groups for front projectors, and two covering the major distribution channel groups for flat panels displays.

“The January 2005 data showed that 85% of all RPTVs were accounted for by the top three brands – Mitsubishi, Samsung, and Sony,” said Rosemary Abowd, the PMA Vice President who directs PMA's research on rear projection. “ For the market as a whole, including traditional CRT-based models as well as newer microdisplay-based ones, Mitsubishi and Sony each garnered 30% shares and Samsung 25%.”

Large-screen TV buyers continue to get more for their money, as the average price paid declined slightly, to $2,755, in January. Clearly, microdisplay-based products have substantially shrunk their price premium over CRT-based ones during the last two years, and the difference continues to decrease. The average price of a set using DLP technology was $3,136, while one using 3LCD technology was $2,861, compared to the average price of the CRT-based set of $1.737.

PMA's premier issue of their new tracking service also found that 4 of 21 combinations of screen size and technology accounted for over 55% of the sales volume. The most popular combinations were, in order of volume:

  • 50-54” DLP
  • 40-44” 3LCD
  • 60-69” DLP
  • 45-49” DLP

NEW TRACKING SERVICE DATA SHOWS INFOCUS CORP.
LEADING WITH ONE-THIRD OF FRONT PROJECTORS
SOLD THROUGH DISTRIBUTORS

PMA's Monthly Tracking Services Now Cover
Channels Selling 90% of All Projectors in North America

Menlo Park, CA – February 22, 2005.  Pacific Media Associates (PMA), the global leader in demand-side market information on large-screen displays, has just released their first monthly report on shipments of front projectors through distributors, which shows that InFocus Corp. accounted for 33% of all front projectors sold in North America through wholesale distributors. Following InFocus were Sony with 15%, Epson with 12%, NEC with 9%, and Toshiba with 8%. Sony, Epson, and Toshiba all demonstrated significant gains from December 2004 to January 2005, according to this compilation of distributor data.

T hese just-released findings come from the premier (January 2005) issue of PMA's new Distributor Projector Tracking Service , which reports and analyzes unit shipments and inventory data provided by American wholesale distributors, the bulk of whose sales go via IT resellers to end users. PMA's new monthly measurement service completes the coverage of all three possible distribution channel groups, joining its six-month-old sibling focused on the retail group (including CE retailers, office stores, computer stores, and direct marketers) and its seven-year-old sibling focused on the Pro AV channel, which is acknowledged by channel participants and manufacturers alike as the single most useful market research service covering the front projector market. These three channel groups respectively sold 25%, 28%, and 37% of all American projector sales in 2004's third quarter, the latest period for which complete data is available.

“Each of the three major channel groups has a distinct mix of projectors, due to differences in both buyer types (a lot more individual consumers buy through the retail channels) and feature set demands (lower brightness and resolution are OK with buyers being supplied via the distributor or retail groups),” according to Michael Abramson, who directs PMA's research on front projectors. He continued, “For example, only 11% of units sold via retail storefronts and direct marketers have 2,000 lumens or more of brightness, while 37% sold through distributors have 2,000+ lumens, and a whopping 59% sold through Pro AV resellers have 2,000+ lumens.”

PMA's premier issue of their new tracking service also found strong differences among projector technology among the three channel groups. Retail strongly favors DLP, with 76% of units sold using that technology (vs. 24% using polysilicon LCDs), Distributors are nearly equally split, with a slight edge toward LCDs at 54% vs. 46% for DLP. And Pro AV  strongly favors LCD with 79% of units sold thru that channel using LCD (vs. 21% for DLP) . PMA's Abramson explains that by saying, “Most of the volume of DLP is concentrated in lower-priced models that are more popular through retail or IT resellers, while most of the brighter models that are favored by Pro AV resellers incorporate polysilicon LCD technology.”

The Top Ten models in PMA's Distributor Projector Tracking Service in January 2005 were:

InFocus X2
Sony VPL-DS100
Epson PowerLite S1+
Sony VPL-CS7
InFocus LP 540
Toshiba TDP-S20
InFocus LP 70+
InFocus LP 640

WORLDWIDE FRONT PROJECTOR MARKET GROWS 42% IN 2004,
27% IN FOURTH QUARTER

EMEA Growth of 54% in 2004, 37% in Fourth Quarter, Outpaces World

Menlo Park, CA – February 17, 2005.  Pacific Media Associates (PMA), the global leader in demand-side market information on large-screen displays, reported that the worldwide market for front projectors grew from 2,490,000 units in 2003 to 3,530,000 units in 2004. The fourth quarter of 2004 marked a milestone in the industry as unit sales topped 1,020,000 units, up from 800,000 in the fourth quarter of 2003. These newly-released figures include all electronic projectors of all sizes, sold either to organizations or individual consumers, and are updated quarterly in the Market Outlook reports component of PMA's Large-Screen Displays Industry Service .

“The strong global economy and substantial price decreases during the first half of 2004 were the principal factors driving this growth,” said Michael Abramson, who directs PMA's research efforts in front projectors. “However, as the global economy slowed and prices stabilized during the second half of the year, worldwide projector growth eased but still registered double-digit gains.”

In the EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa) region, the market grew from 890,000 units in 2003 to 1,370,000 units in 2004, making it the fastest-growing of the three major regions of the world. As in 2003, a dramatic jump in the fourth quarter reversed an otherwise lackluster year, with sales of 430,000 in 2004's fourth quarter as compared with sales of 320,000 in the same period of 2003. “The more rapid growth in EMEA apparently stemmed from manufacturers' increased efforts to tap the strong potential represented by EMEA's large population, high growth from some of the newer members of the EU, expanded distribution channel opportunities, educational tenders, and a buoyant market for 16:9 consumer projectors,” according to Michael Abramson.

The Americas and Asia regions also experienced strong year-over-year growth, but faltered in the fourth quarter. The Americas market grew from 975,000 units in 2003 to 1,350,000 units in 2004, or 39 percent, while fourth quarter sales totaled 370,000 units, up 25 percent from 290,000 in the fourth quarter of 2003. In Asia, 2003's total of 620,000 rose 29% to 800,000 in 2004, while the fourth quarter climbed only 13%, from 190,000 in 2003's fourth quarter to 220,000 in the same period of 2004.
