Menlo Park, CA – December 29, 2004. There are clear differences in how consumers perceive the popular alternatives for large-screen TV, according to over 300 U.S. consumers surveyed in December 2004 by Pacific Media Associates (PMA), the Menlo Park, CA market research firm that tracks the Worldwide large-screen displays market. Since it is these perceptions, not the measurements by technology experts, that determine what consumers will buy, understanding them is the key to predicting the trends in the dynamic TV market.
According to the survey participants, the five most important reasons why they would choose, or not choose, a particular technology were price, reliability, picture quality, screen size, and set size. We have shown the reasons for NOT choosing in the above graph.
These findings are part of a survey with 169 questions that was administered via the Web to over 1,200 respondents in the United States. The survey, in turn, is an integral part of PMA’s Industry Service family of continuing information services, or it can be purchased separately. The consumer portion consisted of 78 questions, and is available for $3,000 separately.
PMA is a global market information firm that specializes in the large-screen displays business, covering all major product categories--front projectors, rear projection, and flat panel displays--and all technologies that can produce an audience-sized picture on a wall or screen from an electronic (video or computer) signal. Gains in XGA-Resolution Models Boosted Overall Average Street Price
Menlo Park, CA – September 24, 2004. Most of the demand for front projectors is concentrated in a very few “sweet spots”, i.e., combinations of the three key features of resolution, projector size, and brightness which, together with price comprise the major decision variables in buyers’ minds, according to Pacific Media Associates (PMA), the Menlo Park, CA market research firm that tracks the Worldwide large-screen displays market. For the retail channels in July 2004, these sweet spots clearly were:
T hese newly-released figures come from the premier (July 2004) issue of PMA's new Retail Projector Tracking Service, which reports on sell-through data provided by sellers in the "retail channels"--including CE retailers, office superstores, computer stores, and direct marketers. PMA’s new monthly sell-through measurement service joins its nearly seven-year old sibling, focused on the Pro AV channel, which is acknowledged by channel participants and manufacturers alike as the single most useful market research service covering the front projector market.
PMA’s premier issue of their new information service found that 42% of all front projectors sold by the "retail channels" were priced below $1,000. However, thanks to a slight upward trend in average brightness, and a shift from a 23% to a 28% portion of XGA-resolution units, from June to July, the overall average street price of front projectors sold through these channels increased from $1,264 in June to $1,280 in July , “The mix of projectors sold through the retail channels is very different than that sold through the Pro AV channel, due to differences in both buyer types (a lot more individual consumers buy through the retail channels) and feature set demands (lower brightness and resolution are OK, and price is more critical),” according to Michael Abramson, who directs PMA’s research on front projectors. He continued, “Even with the increase in XGA-resolution models, SVGA and Wide VGA (AKA 480p) models still accounted for over 70% of all units in July. And interestingly, the now more affordable Wide VGA units grew dramatically, reflecting a much greater interest on the part of consumers who are looking for an inexpensive home entertainment projector model.”
The Top Ten models in PMA's Retail Projector Tracking Service in July 2004 were:

April 2004 30+ Inch Consumer Flat Panel Sales Up 69% Year-Over-Year
Menlo Park, CA – June 26, 2004. Flat panel television sets and TV monitors (models marketed without a digital tuner) have become mainstream consumer products according to Pacific Media Associates (PMA), the Menlo Park, CA market research firm that tracks the worldwide large-screen displays market. These newly-released figures include all flat panel displays of 30” and larger sizes sold either to organizations or individual consumers. (Computer monitors are not included in the PMA data.)
PMA's monthly Retailer/Reseller Tracking Service—which gathers, analyzes, and reports on true sell-through to end-users—found in April that flat panel televisions and TV monitors are booming for models intended for both the PROfessional and the CONsumer end markets. “April 2004 sales of ALL 30” and larger flat panels represented a 55% increase from April 2003, but the growth in the CONsumer sales portion was even higher--a huge 69% increase from April 2003,” said Rosemary Abowd, who directs PMA's flat panel displays research. “These findings are even more significant if one considers that April is normally the beginning of the summer seasonal purchase trend slump. “
What is driving this explosive growth? According to Tom Edwards, PMA's Senior Vice President of Consumer Electronics, it is a combination of the following:

Menlo Park, CA - May 6, 2004. The Worldwide market for front projectors grew from 1,840,000 units in 2002 to 2,490,000 units in 2003, and is predicted to grow to about 3,620,000 units in 2004, according to Pacific Media Associates (PMA), the Menlo Park, CA market research firm that tracks the Worldwide large-screen displays market. These newly-released figures include all electronic projectors of all sizes, sold either to organizations or individual consumers, and are updated quarterly in the Market Outlook reports component of PMA's Large-Screen Displays Industry Service.
"The front projector market has long demonstrated a strong sensitivity to product prices, and the dramatic decrease that accompanied the emergence of the sub-$1000 "crossover" models during 2003 clearly fueled an important portion of this strong units growth," said Michael Abramson, who directs PMA's research efforts in front projectors. "Because of this large decrease in the average selling price, though, revenues actually declined 2%, from US$5.68 billion in 2002 to US$5.55 billion in 2003. However, we believe that prices will stabilize somewhat in 2004-partly because the supply of projectors is now lagging demand due to a shortage of lamps for some of the most popular model designs-so we expect revenues to grow a healthy 28% in 2004, to about US$7.10 billion.
In the United States, the market grew from 579,000 units in 2002 to 840,000 units in 2003, and is estimated to grow to 1,268,000 units in 2004. In revenue terms, the market eked out a 2% gain, growing from $1.91 billion in 2002 to $1.94 billion in 2003, with an expected growth of a healthy 31% in 2004 to $2.54 billion. "The more rapid growth in the U.S. than in the rest of the world is primarily due to its faster economic recovery," according to Michael Abramson. "In particular, the EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa) region should equal or exceed the Americas region (of which the U.S. accounts for about 84%), especially with the expanded membership of the EU, but the strong Euro and continuing structural issues are currently restraining economic growth."

Menlo Park, CA - January 31, 2004. Thanks to their top scores on 19 of the 25 aspects of marketing support, products, and after-sale support related to resellers' sales of professional front data/video projectors, Mitsubishi came out on top in the overall composite rating for the third year in a row in the annual survey conducted by Pacific Media Associates (PMA), the Menlo Park, CA market research firm that tracks the large-screen display market. PMA's Annual Reseller Survey is widely recognized as the authoritative source of independent, unbiased ratings of large-screen displays manufacturers by resellers throughout North America.
"Because of the extremely competitive nature of the professional front data/video projector market, manufacturers strive mightily to offer resellers attractive sales and marketing programs to assure that their brands receive high priority," said Michael Abramson, PMA's project manager for the Reseller Survey. "Despite strong efforts by all manufacturers, Mitsubishi actually gained ground in 2003, a tribute to their sales and marketing efforts."
The survey also ranked the 25 aspects according to their importance, so manufacturers scoring highly on the more important aspects boosted their overall composite score more than those who scored well on less important aspects. Since the report includes numerical ratings for each manufacturer for each aspect, manufacturers can learn if they are doing well on those aspects to which they have dedicated the most effort, and to see where they are lagging. The individual top-rated companies for the most important eight aspects are given below:
The 2003 survey, the ninth that PMA has conducted, covered a broad range of facts, figures, and opinions from the 216 participating resellers, many of whom are among the largest in North America. Although the number of responses for any particular pair of brands might not be large enough to make strong statements about the true statistical difference if the ratings figures are close, the difference between the highest and lowest rated brands for any given aspect is clearly statistically significant.

Menlo Park, CA - January 30, 2004. Most North American resellers of front projectors to professional (organizational) buyers believe that there will be a large demand for sub-$1,000 models, but most aren't too happy about selling them because the margins are so low, according to an annual survey conducted by Pacific Media Associates (PMA), the Menlo Park, CA market research firm that tracks the large-screen display market. Specifically, 73% of these resellers were very optimistic or somewhat optimistic about demand potential for $999 projectors, but only 27% were very enthusiastic or somewhat enthusiastic about selling them.
Michael Abramson, PMA's project manager for the Reseller Survey, also highlighted its findings regarding the dramatic increase in networking of projectors expected by these resellers, saying that "44% of projectors sold in 2004 should be networkable, up from 26% in 2003, and 24% of them should actually be operating in networks by 2004." However, he indicated that wireless networking has a ways to go yet, as 88% of recent past sales were wired.
PMA's annual Reseller Survey is widely recognized as the authoritative source of information on resellers of professional front projectors throughout North America. The 2003 survey, the ninth that PMA has conducted, covered a broad range of facts, figures, and opinions from the 216 participating resellers, many of whom are among the largest in North America. Menlo Park, CA - January 5, 2004. During the first quarter of 2003 an increasing number of consumers opted for the better picture quality of plasma displays in the 40-49 inch size range enabled by the increased pixel count of XGA-resolution (1024 x 768 pixels) models. However, since April 2003 the less expensive lower-resolution Wide VGA (with 852 x 480 pixels) models have continued to account for an increasing share, attracting over 55% of the market volume in this size category through the second and third quarters of 2003. This finding comes from true sell-through data collected from final sellers of these products in the monthly Reseller Tracking Service, a survey of 50 key North American retailers and resellers conducted by Pacific Media Associates (PMA), the Menlo Park, CA market research firm that tracks the Worldwide and Americas large-screen display markets.
"There was a sharp increase in popularity of these XGA-resolution models during the first quarter of 2003, following a big 2002 holiday sale of the lower-resolution models," says Rosemary Abowd, who directs flat panel displays research for Pacific Media Associates, "but more recently the continuing price declines of the Wide VGA models have resulted in their making up for lost ground. And we believe that the 2003 holiday sales again favored the less-costly Wide VGA models."
"In the world of large-screen displays, size isn't everything," says PMA's president, William Coggshall. "The whole promise of HDTV was that you could sit close enough to the screen so that it filled most of your field of view, with the screen's resolution being high enough that you couldn't see individual pixels. With 42-inch plasma displays' being considerably larger than those of most direct view CRT TVs, and with relatively short viewing distances, having more pixels with smaller sizes can deliver a perceptibly better viewing experience."
From the manufacturer's standpoint, it is important to find the "sweet spots" of the market, i.e., those combinations of features and performance with the maximum demand. Since there are three important different resolutions-Wide VGA, XGA, and ALIS-possible within the 40-49 size, it is important to gauge the demand for each combination accurately in order to match the size and timing of demand. And to know the relative sizes of each combination requires a relational database structure of historical data and forecasts such as the one developed by Pacific Media Associates that contains detailed specifications and shipments data for thousands of large-screen display models.
